Embracing Social Prescribing at Geelong Boxing Club

Jul 03, 2024

At Geelong Boxing Club, we are passionate advocates for the concept of social prescribing. Social prescribing is an innovative approach in healthcare that connects individuals with non-medical resources and activities within their community to improve their overall well-being. Instead of solely relying on traditional medical treatments, social prescribing encourages the use of community services, such as exercise programs, arts, social clubs, and other supportive activities, to address physical, emotional, and social needs.

Why We're Passionate Advocates

Our passion for social prescribing stems from our belief in the holistic benefits of physical activity and community engagement. We have witnessed firsthand how boxing can transform lives, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Boxing provides a structured environment for individuals to release stress, build resilience, and foster a sense of community and belonging.

Research consistently shows that engaging in regular physical activity can significantly improve mental health outcomes, reduce anxiety and depression, and enhance overall quality of life. By incorporating social prescribing into our practice, we aim to extend these benefits to more people within the community, ensuring that more people can experience the positive impact of boxing.

Our Commitment to Social Prescribing

To become a shining example of a socially prescribed offering, we are actively making several changes to the structure of our business:

Creating Inclusive Programs:

We are designing and implementing programs tailored to various age groups and needs, including kids, young people, and adults. These programs focus on building physical fitness, emotional resilience, and social connections.

Collaborating with Healthcare Providers:

We are forging partnerships with local healthcare providers, schools, and community organisations to raise awareness about social prescribing and how our boxing programs can serve as a valuable resource for their patients and clients.

Enhancing Accessibility:

Recognising the importance of accessibility, we continue to offer flexible scheduling and affordable pricing for our programs. We also provide private sessions and specialised classes to cater to individuals with unique needs.

Providing Holistic Support:

Beyond physical training, our programs incorporate elements of mental health support, such as mindfulness practices and stress management techniques. Our co-owner and director, Lena Moxon, who is currently completing her Graduate Certificate in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, plays a key role in ensuring our programs are designed to support emotional regulation and resilience.

Gathering and Sharing Data:

We are committed to gathering data and feedback from our participants to continually improve our programs. This data helps us demonstrate the tangible benefits of our offerings and advocate for the wider adoption of social prescribing.

As we move forward, our goal is to make Geelong Boxing Club a cornerstone of social prescribing in our community. We believe that by providing a supportive and engaging environment, we can help individuals of all ages lead healthier, happier lives. We invite anyone working within schools, healthcare, or community services in the Geelong region to reach out and explore potential collaborations. Together, we can create a network of support that truly makes a difference.
