Feel too unfit to go to the gym?
Nov 19, 2020Feel too unfit to go to the gym?
You aren’t alone! We hear it all the time. It can be really disheartening to be thinking everyone else is “up here” and I’m all the way “down here” when it comes to experience & fitness.
Right?
Here’s the thing : it’s not a competition. Logically, we know you understand that, but a lifetime of feeling judged, pushed, critiqued, assessed and for the most part “not as good as the others” makes coming to the gym trigger feelings of anxiety, being left out, being left behind and being made to feel not good enough.
If you were always good at sports, and confident at school sports carnivals and managed to get through your childhood without significant memories that weight heavy on you… well consider yourself in the minority!!
Most of us are up against a whole lot of negative self talk that is a reflection of the uncomfortable, awkward experiences we had as kids so coming into a group session feels REALLY HARD for the first few times.
There’s nothing wrong with you if you get nervous about it – it’s your brain trying to protect you by reminding you of what could go wrong if you go ahead and give it a go.
Hear those thoughts, and reassure that child in you that it is ok. You are supported. This is something you want to do.
Then go ahead and create NEW EVIDENCE that will eventually outweigh the negative experiences you have had when it comes to exercise.
You don’t have to smash your session. You don’t even have to be able to do all the movements. You just have to have a little fun while you are doing it.
Be proud of your effort. Make connections and feel encouraged and uplifted. Be astounded that you really do have it in you to just move a little more every time you come in to the gym.
Before you know it – you’ll be walking in without all the negative self talk that makes you resist the experience AND you’ll be looking forward to the good vibes you generate within yourself and with your community.
It’s a vibe – every time
If you know you want to get moving – but there is a whole lot of resistance within you, reach out so we can get to know your story and how we can best support you too.
