Are you ready to fail another new year’s resolution?
Have you thought ahead to 2019 ? Have you started writing a bucket list of things you want to do differently in the new year? Please stop!
DO NOT make another new year’s resolution about losing weight or shaping up!
The internet is about to be FLOODED with invitations to join transformation style challenges. New Year New you?
Don’t be sucked into thinking that all it takes is signing up to a ‘challenge’ to make significant and long lasting change.
People will try and tell you it’s hard to smash your health and fitness goals. I am telling you – it’s not.
You already have everything you need to have the body you want – you just need to get out of your own way !
I have nothing against goal setting. In fact, I attribute a lot of who I am and what I have achieved to setting some pretty inspiring goals and relentlessly working towards them.
However, I believe everyone misses an important step when they set goals!
Goal setting is EASY. It’s not hard to talk about what you would like to do. It’s not even hard to write it all down. You’ve set a target. You have a completion date. Ready, set. GO!
STOP! The problem is, you haven’t equipped yourself with the right mindset to actually achieve those goals. It might be a new year – but the same challenges and roadblocks that popped up this year will find you again in the new year.
New year, same you.
More often than not, we are kidding ourselves when we set our goals.
Often when we set a goal for ourselves we are at our highest peak of motivation. Our high spirited mood dictates our inflated sense of direction and commitment. The problem is – when we are no longer in that mood, we are unlikely to do the things we said we were going to do. We mean well – but we get carried away daydreaming about how amazing it will feel to reach that goal and overlook the things we actually have to endure to get there!
Reaching a goal doesn’t have to become an epic story. We don’t need to overhaul our whole life and we certainly don’t need to call it a complete transformation. If we strip it back and get real with ourselves- all we really need is to practice commitment and consistency.
Master commitment and consistency and you will achieve anything you set your mind to.
If you have set a goal in the past and not achieved it – you are likely to let yourself down, again.
When we don’t reach a goal – or abandon our attempts, we are disappointed in ourselves. We tell ourselves stories like ‘Ill never be able to do that’. Then we beat ourselves up about it and it feels pretty shitty. But our ego has a hard time dealing with perceived failure – and so often we compensate for that by diving head first into the bad habits and poor choices that lead us astray. Its as if we need to prove to ourselves that we don’t even care that we didn’t reach our goal – and we like being the way we are. I wasn’t supposed to eat chocolate? Watch me eat this whole block now. That goal isn’t important to me.
…but it is.
The lies we tell ourselves are the poison that keeps us unhappy.
And so this ‘goal’ sets us even further back and it takes us a long while to gather the inner strength again to give it another crack.
Time rolls by – and that’s why nothing changes.
Working towards a goal is simple, but it is certainly not always easy.
We aren’t going to always want to action our intentions. More often than not we are going to want to take the easy way out and will become very creative in the excuses we can come up with to get out of what we know we are supposed to do. Or, we might take a different approach and simply say “f$ck it”.
Catching ourselves in those moments and identifying the triggers that lead us to ‘fall off the wagon’ is a powerful tool. In choosing to respond differently in those moments than we might have done in the past – we will be rewarded with a different outcome.
We begin to strengthen our commitment and consistently choose to move forward instead of allowing ourselves to turn a blind eye to our own self sabotage.
This is why we first need to exercise our state of mind, our commitment and our consistency before we go racing towards achieving specific goals.
When we stack healthy habits on top of each other with an unwaivering commitment and consistency – results will inevitably come.
Make January the very best month of your life. It might not look like much to anyone else, but within yourself you it may very well be the first time you find out just what you are truly capable of. Commit to 31 days of actioning every intention you have. Consistently build upon healthy habits and solidify your mindset.
