Rowing – A GREAT low impact, cardio workout!

Jan 30, 2018

At Geelong Boxing Club one of the first pieces of equipment you will see when you walk through our doors is the rower. If you have been to a gym before, there is a high chance that you have seen rowers…and avoided them! In our experience many people have spent a lot more time on treadmills or stationary bikes as traditionally they have been obvious choices for cardio workouts.

Don’t be afraid to try something new – the rower is an EXCELLENT addition to your workout!

At Geelong Boxing Club we incorporate the rower into many of our group sessions. Some times it is used as a gentle warm up, and in other workouts it will be used to absolutely kick your butt!

As always, there is method to our madness and it is with good reason that we program using the rower so often.

The rowing machine provides a total body workout effectively and efficiently. In order to complete a full rowing stroke you must use both your upper and lower body. In order to keep moving you are pretty much forced to engage your legs and your arms!

Not only does the rower fire up your muscles, it gets your heart pumping! Rowing is an endurance exercise (although we can do use it for sprint rounds to suit our workout!) Spending time on the rower will improve your lung, heart and circulatory functions – excellent motivation to keep going!

We also love the rower because it is very low-impact. Rowing is a natural motion that puts very little stress on your joints. This means that when we include it in a group session, we are almost guaranteed that it will be a suitable exercise for everyone. Even our members who are suffering from joint pain or recovering from surgery can ease their way back into exercise on the rower (once cleared by their health care practitioner)

Here is a simple (but challenging!!) workout you can do on the rower if you want to add a cardio burst to your session!

Row 400m

Rest for 45 seconds

Row 200m in less than half the time it took you to row 400m

Repeat for 4 rounds
