Shake it off – No More Gym Phobia!

Apr 18, 2017

When was the last time you set foot into a gym? Does just the very thought of entering a gym make you sweat? It is very common for people to experience feelings of anxiety and nervousness about going to a gym. It could be that you don’t know how to use equipment, or maybe you had a bad experience in the past that is holding you back from giving it a go again.

Here at Geelong Boxing Club, we take the time to welcome each new member into our gym, and take pride in ensuring that everyone feels comfortable, safe and supported.

If you are looking to join a gym, but are still feeling nervous about taking that first step and walking through the doors – here are some simple tips to boost your confidence and bring action to your intentions.

Join in on a Class or Group Session

Knowing what you are going to do once you get to the gym will alleviate feelings of apprehension. Walking aimlessly on a treadmill, or half heartedly picking up weights is not very motivating, and will not inspire you to keep coming back to the gym. Joining in on a group session or class like our Muay Thai classes or F.I.T Group sessions will ensure you have a sense of purpose for the time you are investing at the gym.

If you wanted a more personalised approach, having a trainer at Geelong Boxing Club to create, implement and monitor a program based on the specific results you want will allow you to simply show up feeling focused and motivated!

Wear the right Gear

Our health and fitness goals cannot be given to us – we have to put in the time, dedication and sweat it takes for our bodies to become fitter, faster and stronger. No one piece of clothing can magically make us run faster, or lift more – you certainly have to put in the work.

However, when rejoining a gym – being comfortable in what you are wearing can make you feel more at ease, from the inside out! You do not want to be wearing gear that you need to pull, adjust and be distracted by during your session – it distracts from your workout and is simply annoying to deal with! When training it is important that you are focusing on your body, and performing each movement correctly to ensure you are getting the most out of your session.

You shouldn’t simply be pulling on some shorts and a t-shirt for your session -it can be beneficial to invest in workout gear that not only looks good, but is functional! The type of training you do will dictate the type of gear you need.

Quality pieces are an investment worth considering. It is a good idea to try on items before purchasing to make sure that they sit comfortably on your body and give you the support you need (Jumping around a change room is encouraged!). Your sessions should be a time to focus on your body – don’t let uncomfortable, sweat filled, unsupportive clothing get in the way of your best effort!

Train and gain with a friend

Encouragement and support from someone close to you can be invaluable! Especially if that friend is on the same health and fitness journey and can relate to your new active lifestyle and the challenges you may be experiencing. It can be reassuring and comforting to have a friend that you see regularly when you are training – it could be someone that does the same group sessions as you. Asking a friend to join you will add a strong element of accountability for you both – this can be the driving force that ensures you follow your training plan! Do it together! Your exercise sessions can be a great opportunity to catch up with each other, and that will motivate you to get to the gym whether you feel like it or not!
