Sparring Expectations Established
Apr 21, 2024No, actually, we dont hold space for your aggression.
Lets get VERY clear here. We are big advocates for boxing as a form of cathartic release BUT catharsis is not synonymous with unchecked or uncontrolled aggression.
Effective catharsis involves healthy emotional regulation and self-awareness, allowing individuals to express their feelings in a manner that is both productive and respectful.
This may involve engaging in physical activities like boxing which provides outlets for emotional expression without causing harm to oneself or others.
Hitting the heavy bag in a boxing gym is like a pressure valve for your emotions. You can let out all your pent-up frustrations without worrying about hurting anyone or getting into trouble. It's just you, your gloves, and that big ol' bag waiting to take your punches.
But when it comes to sparring, it's a whole different ballgame. You're not just swinging away at a lifeless bag; you're trading blows with a real person. And that person deserves your respect and consideration, just like you'd want in return.
Think of sparring as a dance— a rough and tumble one. You and your partner are working together to improve your skills, not to beat each other senseless. Using your sparring buddy as a punching bag for your emotional baggage isn't cool. It's like crashing a party and starting a fight—it ruins the vibe for everyone.
So, next time you're feeling fired up in the gym, take it out on the bag, not your sparring partner. You'll still get that sweet release without stepping on anyone's toes (or gloves). Plus, you'll keep the gym atmosphere chill and friendly, which is what boxing is all about, right?
Sparring with Steve on Fridays is available for our advanced teens and adults - but it not just open to anyone. It is by invite only and alot of consideration goes into who can join in on sparring sessions, for good reason.
